Past and Future Land Use/Land Cover Changes in the Ethiopian Fincha Sub-Basin

چکیده
The increasing human pressure on African regions is recognizable when looking at Land Use Cover (LULC) change maps, generally derived from satellite imagery. Using the Ethiopian Fincha watershed as a case study, present work focuses (i) identifying historical LULC in period 1989–2019; (ii) estimating next thirty years, combining Geographical Information Systems (GIS) with Change Modelling (LCM). Landsat 5/8 images were combined field evidence to map three reference years (1989, 2004, 2019), while Multi-Layer Markov Chain (MPL-MC) model of LCM was applied forecast 2030, 2040, and 2050. classified into six classes: waterbody, grass/swamp, built-up, agriculture; forest; shrub. results have shown that, past 30 experienced reduction forest shrubs about ?40% ?13%, respectively, mainly due ever-increasing agricultural activities, such trend also expected future. In fact, for 2019–2050, simulated significant decrease both (around ?70% ?20%, respectively), favor more areas covered by grass (19%) built-up (20%). It worth noting that natural forests can drive an increase soil erosion, fostering siltation water reservoirs located sub-basin. study pointed out urgency taking actions sub-basin counteract changes, which eventually lead less sustainable environment.

Monitoring and assessment of land use/land cover changes in Kashkan basin using futures studies approach in managing ecosystem services
Land use/cover change is one of the main factors in environmental changes. The changes directly affect the value of ecosystem services. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of land use/land cover change in the Kashkan area on its ecosystem services. This research was carried out in three stages, including the analysis of land cover changes, prediction of changes, and carbon st...
متن کاملGlobal Climate Responses to Land Use and Land Cover Changes Over the Past Two Millennia
A reconstructed land use/land cover change (LUCC) dataset was used with the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to conduct a climate sensitivity analysis over the past two millennia. Compared to a controlled experiment conducted with the CESM, the LUCC showed significant biogeophysical effects on global climate on multi-decadal to centennial time scales. The global annual mean temperature and p...
متن کاملLand Use and Land Cover Changes in a Tropical River Basin: A Case from Bharathapuzha River Basin, Southern India
A study of the spatial and temporal changes in land use and land cover (LULC) was conducted using Remote Sensing and GIS. We analyzed the LULC of Bharathapuzha river basin, south India using multispectral LANDSAT imageries of 1973-2005 time periods. 31% depletion in the natural vegetation cover and 8.7% depletion in wetland agriculture area were seen in the basin during the period. On the other...

Ž . In undisturbed tropical forest ecosystems, the phosphorus P cycle is essentially AclosedB with minimal short-term losses or gains of P. The forms and dynamics of soil P, however, can be greatly affected by land use changes, which often involve changes in vegetation cover, biomass production and nutrient cycling in the ecosystem. متن کاملIdentifying land cover variability distinct from land cover change: Cheatgrass in the Great Basin
An understanding of land use/land cover change at local, regional, and global scales is important in an increasingly human-dominated biosphere. Here, we report on an under-appreciated complexity in the analysis of land cover change important in arid and semi-arid environments. In these environments, some land cover types show a high degree of inter-annual variability in productivity. In this st...
